Cruising to the Glaciers of Alaska

If you’ve always wanted to see a glacier in person, Alaska is one of the most popular destinations to find them! Looking at a map of the Gulf of Alaska, there’s a handful of glaciers located on the coastline of the Pacific Ocean and inland Alaska. Depending on how deep into exploration you want to go, there’s always a way to get there. Here at Cruise Planners, it’s obvious our chosen mode of exploration is by water! That being said, let’s get into a handful of glaciers you may come across on an Alaskan cruise!

Johns Hopkins Glacier at Glacier Bay National Park

Sitting at the end of the Glacier Bay Fjord in Glacier Bay National Park and Reserve, Johns Hopkins Glacier is truly a marvel to witness. Nearly a mile wide and 12 miles in length from the Fairweather Mountains as its backdrop, this landmark is a must-see during your time in Alaska. Even better, the majority of Alaskan cruises have a visit to Glacier Bay on their itinerary! But they book up fast!

Mendenhall Glacier

Located a handful of miles from the capital city of Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier is one of the most accessible and revered glaciers in Alaska! This glacier is surrounded by hiking trails, bodies of water, forests, and the greater Juneau Icefield, which all draw tourists and locals alike to its shores. If your Alaska cruise makes a stop in Juneau for the day, make sure you put a visit to Mendenhall Glacier on the itinerary as an excursion! Or take the local bus.

Hubbard Glacier

Massive and majestic in the tides of Disenchantment Bay, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America and is the focal point of countless glacier excursions throughout Alaska and Canada. As huge as it seems above the water at six miles wide, the glacier goes even deeper underneath and extends all the way back to Mt. Logan in Canadian territory! While you’ll only see a slice of this enormous natural phenomenon, it is more than enough to desire a return trip.
