Known for its endless beaches, famous landmarks, token kangaroo sightings, and rich indigenous culture, the country of Australia truly stands out among the others you’ll find around the globe. In comparison to North America, their summer is our winter and their winter is our summer, thanks to their opposite position in the Southern Hemisphere right below the Equator! What a way to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, right?
Better yet, any season in Australia is a great season for a vacation. If you’ve been thinking about taking a trip “down under”, keep reading for a rundown of what not to miss out on!
Australia: Where Islands & Deserts Meet
Home to one of the seven wonders of the world and the iconic Sydney Opera House, Australia is the largest island in Oceania, the sixth largest country in the world, and is technically considered its own continent! The country is divided into six states and two territories with their own capital cities:
States:
New South Wales (NSW), Sydney – The largest city in the nation!
Queensland (QLD), Brisbane – Home to the Great Barrier Reef & endless sun.
Victoria (VIC), Melbourne – One of the most liveable & lively cities in the world.
South Australia (SA), Adelaide – Wine country & relaxation galore.
Western Australia (WA), Perth – The largest state of Australia!
Tasmania (TAS), Hobart – An island separate from the mainland & just as amazing!
Territories:
Northern Territory (NT), Darwin – Where the outback & Aboriginal culture thrive.
Australian Capital Territory, Canberra – The capital of the country, neighboring the iconic Sapphire Coast.
If you’re wanting to experience Australia’s city life, the Eastern side of the country is the place to be with Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane all within a two-flight of one another. However, if you’re dying to cross the Australian Outback off your bucket list, the country's Western, Southern, and Northern regions have the authentic desert experience you’re looking for. Perth and Adelaide stand in these regions as options for accommodation and further metropolitan exploration. Don’t forget about an island excursion across the Bass Strait to Tasmania!
Start planning your Australian itinerary with these world-renown wonders and landmarks:
The Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia
One of the seven wonders of the world, a World Heritage UNESCO Site, and home to the world’s largest coral reef, the natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef is truly a sight to behold! Up close, you’re met with sprawling sea life amongst coral species, fish, dolphins, whales, and clear waters perfect for diving, snorkeling, and more. Zoom out and find a living organism right off the coast of Queensland that can be seen from space and according to the official website, is greater in size than the Great Wall of China!

The Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia
A fantastic group activity with epic coastal sights beyond Melbourne’s city limits, the Great Ocean Road runs along Australia’s Southeast coast and will easily curb your road trip enthusiasm. You can hail a rental car and make it a quick day trip out of the city, but locals recommend two or more days to really experience the hidden gems for surfing, kangaroo spotting, whale watching, and even forest exploration! Be sure to put the 12 Apostles on the itinerary: The stunning rock pillars hugging the coastline that have formed over millions of years!

This one is a given and you’ve more than likely recognized Australia through this landmark – the Sydney Opera House! It is Australia’s #1 tourist destination and is actually a protected World Heritage Cultural site for its groundbreaking architecture and prime location in the country’s largest city. Think preservation along the lines of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, or the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona… that’s a big deal! Why not see this legend in person?
